Farming - all u need to know about it!

Farming in ArcheAge is fundamental to earning gold and crafting the most desirable items in the game. For some it may appear to be overwhelming because there are so many different crops, saplings and animals that you can have but you only have a small space in which to place them. With this in mind it can be difficult to decide what to place on your farm, especially if you are not quite sure what you will get from each item. This guide aims to change that!

When you start out you will get a small 8×8 meter farm as a reward for your first trade run quest with the Blue Salt Brotherhood. This isn’t very spacious, you will only manage a couple of trees/animals and a few crops at most but once you complete  your fourth trade run quest with the Blue Salt Brotherhood you will get a large scarecrow farm which is 16×16 meters in size and this is were your farming really begins!

Placing Your Farm

Before you can do anything you need to find a location to place your farm. There are designated areas all over the world that you can choose between and it can be competitive if your server has a high population so you can’t always afford to be picky about your location. There are also areas available that are not shown on the map but this may be fixed in a future patch.

Construction, Taxes & Usage Permissions

Once you have your farm placed you will need to construct it. The materials required to construct your farm will depend on the farm you are building, the bigger the farm, the more materials required. I have provided a list of the required materials below for each farm type.

Scarecrow Garden

10 Lumber (30 Logs)

Large Scarecrow Garden

1 Lumber Pack (100 Lumber / 300 Logs)

Farmhouse

10 Stone Packs (1000 Stone Bricks / 3000 Raw Stone)

5 Lumber Packs (500 Lumber / 1500 Logs)

5 Iron Packs (500 Iron Ingots / 1500 Iron Ore)

Marine House

10 Lumber Packs (1000 Lumber / 3000 Logs)

5 Stone Packs (500 Stone Bricks / 1500 Raw Stone)

5 Iron Packs (500 Iron Ingots / 1500 Iron Ore)

Once you have placed your farm you will need to pay tax on the land. This tax protects your farm from attackers. You pay your taxes once you receive a letter in the mail. Once received you can visit your mailbox, open the letter and click the ‘Pay’ button. This will protect your farm for the following week. If you don’t pay your taxes for the week then you will get a late payment penalty.

If you don’t pay your taxes for 2 weeks then your farm will eventually disappear or may be destroyed by other players since your farm is no longer protected. You can demolish your farm if you wish. Once demolished you will receive your farm design back in the mail but you will not get your construction materials back. As you increase the amount of property you own your taxes will also increase substantially so only maintain the property that you can afford!

As you can see on the picture above there is a section called Usage Permissions. This allows you to set the permissions for who can use your farm. If you want to be the only person to access you farm then you can keep it at private. You can also choose to set it to either family or guild so your close friends can also use your farm which is extremely useful if you are going to be offline for a few days because you can get a friend or guild member to take care of your farm. There is the option to set your farm as open to the public which is really not recommended because it would allow anyone to dig up your crops or kill your animals.

Seeds, Saplings and Livestock

So now you have placed your farm, built it, set the usage permissions and paid the taxes. This is when the real farming starts! There are many different things that you can place on your farm that it can be difficult to choose, especially when you don’t know what each thing gives you in return. Each item placed on your farm does have a chance to give a rare item back such as a Golden Egg from Chickens, Aspen Bark from Aspen trees and Lucky Clovers from Clover seeds but don’t expect much of this at the start, the chance increases as you skill up in Husbandry, Logging and Gathering.

There are so many different types of seeds, saplings and livestock that it isn’t possible to list them all without making the page unnecessarily long so I have compiled them all in a spreadsheet which you can view by clicking HERE. There are other saplings that don’t appear on the spreadsheet above. These can be found in the wild by uprooting trees which has a chance to give you a sapling.

When you plant a seed on your farm you can gather water from a nearby well and water your crop. This will reduce the amount of time that is required to grow. It is best to do this once you plant the seed because you can’t do it towards the end of the growth time to help finish it off.

Animals need to be fed on a regular basis that will vary depending on what type of animals you have on your farm. You can gather raw materials from animals such as eggs from chickens and milk from cows but this can only be done after you feed them. You can refer to the spreadsheet linked above to see what feed each animal needs. Once you feed an animal their status will change to Thriving. This is when you will be able to gather raw materials from them or butcher them.

You can butcher animals at any time but you will get very little materials from them. To be efficient it is recommended that you butcher them after you feed them so that they are thriving. Once a thriving animal is butchered it will provide much more meat and pelt which can be later used to create leather.

Climate

When placing crops and livestock on your farm you will need to take the climate of the zone in to consideration. There are four types of climate in ArcheAge – Temperate, Tropical, Arid and Subarctic. You can see the climate of a zone by opening the map and referring to the bottom right, it will show the climate type.

On the tooltip of what you are placing on your farm you will see a growth/mature time. This can range from less than an hour to multiple days. If you place your crops or livestock in the right climate then they will grow/mature faster than the time stated on the tooltip.

Aqua Farm

Farming in ArcheAge isn’t just limited to the surface, you can even farm under water if you have an Aqua farm or Marine House. On an aqua farm you can place various coral and oysters that can be used to gain pearls. The corals and pearls can be used in various crafting recipes. You can purchase Aqua Farms and Marine Houses from Mirage Isle for 14 Guilda Stars and 500 Nui’s Tears respectively.

  Farmer’s Workstation

A Farmer’s Workstation is a tool that you can craft with the Carpentry profession. To craft the Farmer’s Workstation you will need 30 Lumber, 1 Viscous Glossy Oil, which can be crafted by an Alchemist, and a Scarecrow Garden Design. That is a small Scarecrow farm. In order to craft the workstation you will need to demolish your small farm and stick to your large Scarecrow garden/Farmhouse.

The Farmer’s Workstation can be used to craft a lot of helpful things such as seed bundles. This allows you to place an amount equal to 10 of the same seeds at once which reduces your planting and gathering time significantly. Seed bundles will also give you bait worms when harvested which can be used for fishing, or you can sell them for a good price on the auction house.

You can also use the Farmer’s Workstation to craft Eco-Friendly Fuel to boost the speed of the farm wagon, however this is not essential to make the farm wagon move. If you are planning on having a lot of animals on your farm then you will need a Farmer’s Workstation to craft the Combined Feed which is used by quite a few animals. If your animal happens to get sick then you will need some Livestock Supplement to restore them back to health.

With the Farmer’s Workstation you can also craft a quest item. This requires 5 Raw Chicken, 15 Cultivated Ginseng, 25 Garlic and 50 Rice. Once crafted you can deliver it to an auctioneer for a reward. This quest can be done once per day. The Garlic, Rice and Ginseng can all be grown on your farm and the Raw Chicken meat is obtained from a chicken coop. To craft a chicken coop you require 20 Bamboo and you can place 5 chicks inside.

Q & A

Predicting profitability is difficult at this time because auction house prices are fluctuating. If you only have a small farm at this time and want to use it for the purposes of earning money then it can be tricky due to the lack of space. If I was to answer this question at the beginning of the alpha I would say Willow trees because the price and demand for Lumber was very high then.

Now I would say you have three options.

1) Search the auction house to see what is doing well in price and plant/place whatever it may be.

2) Go out mining/logging. While the price of Iron is on a downward turn, the price of stone is still very reasonable. At the time of this post the cost of 100 Stone Bricks is 12 gold. I find that a great source of raw stone is from the Star Shards on the ocean floor at the south east of Cinterstone. You can also find quite a few of complete trees ready for chopping in White Arden and Solzreed.

3) Secret farms, also known as illegal farms. This is the riskiest of the 3 options but has a potentially huge return. When I started playing with my friend we had a similar issue. We were stuck with our small farm because we didn’t know anyone who could help us do the fourth trade run quest for the large farm. Instead we invested our time and money in secret farms. We found good hiding spots and would plant 30-50 trees. If we were lucky we would return a few hours later and hope that they were still there. If they were then we had hit a motherload and would reap in hundreds of logs for selling.

This is largely how we made our start. Over time it got difficult as hiding spots got found out but it is still worth considering. We are in a position were we have 2 large farms, 2 farmhouses and an aqua farm so we no longer need to resort to secret farms but they gave us a much needed push to get on our feet and start to make progress. If you want  more tips on secret farming you can read a post on our forum about that very subject. I understand that this may not fully answer your question but I hope it contributes to helping you get started in the world of farming.
